Safe Release of Fr. Alphonsus Afina
We are overjoyed to announce that the Deputy Executive Director, Justice Development and Peace Initiative in Maiduguri Diocese (JDPC Maiduguri), Rev. Fr. Alphonsus D. Afina regained his freedom yesterday alongside 10 others, after 51 days in captivity.
Fr. Afina is currently receiving medical attention, as well as rest and recovery due to his ordeals, and the diocesan authorities request that we respect his privacy, to ensure his physical and mental well-being during this period of recovery.
JDPC Maiduguri expresses profound gratitude to God for Fr. Afina’s safe return and extends heartfelt appreciation to the security agencies and the local authorities for their tireless efforts towards ensuring Fr. Afina’s freedom; we appreciate the staff of JDPC Maiduguri, our donors, partners, countless CSOs, NGOs, INGOs, and the entire community for their relentless prayers and unwavering support throughout this difficult period. We thank the various diplomatic communities who expressed concern and advocacy, which led to his safe release, and finally, but equally important, we also wish to thank the media and all well-wishers for raising awareness and supporting the call for his release.
Recall that it was while Fr. Afina was on a trip to support one of the organization’s programs that on 1st June 2025, he was abducted during an NSAG attack on the convoy he was travelling in along with two other staff of the organization. The attack in which Fr. Afina was abducted alongside other travelers also resulted in the killing of some travelers, including one of the JDPC staff, Mr. Zion Japhet.
Even as we remain grateful to God for Fr. Afina’s safe return, our hearts and prayers are still very much with the family of Mr. Zion Japhet. May Zion’s soul and the souls of all the faithful departed continue to rest in perfect peace with the Lord.
The incident highlights once again the urgent need for safer communities, and we renew our calls for peace and security for all citizens.
Thank you.
Signed: Management.
